KCUE Holds 2008 Summer Seminar for University Presidents[20080702]

The KCUE held its annual Summer Seminar for University Presidents from July 2-4 at the Soul Beach Hotel in Yangyang, Gangwon Province. Presidents from 147 universities nationwide discussed the seminar’s theme “Challenges and strategies in strengthening universities’ competitiveness” and relevant policy options and examples of implementation. Presenters included Minister of Education, Science, and Technology Kim Doyeon, KAIST President Seo Nampyo, Korea University President Yi Gisu, Richumaekan University President Kawaguchi Kiyohumi (Japan), and Ewha Women’s University President Yi Baeyong.

In the seminar’s opening address, KCUE Chairman Son Byeongdu said that raising the competitiveness of South Korean universities is critical to individual schools, and it should take top priority in government affairs as it affects the country’s competitiveness in the endless competition of a globalized world. He emphasized that universities must play a central role in national competitiveness as pools of human, intellectual, and cultural capital.
