Major Policies and Plans for 2010

The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MEST) announced the following major policy initiatives for 2010.

1. Expansion of teacher evaluation system:

MEST will expand a teacher evaluation system for professional development into all elementary schools and middle schools beginning March 2010.

2. Student selection through admission officer system:

Under this system, higher education institutions screen and select freshmen on the basis of a comprehensive review of their aptitude, potential, and personality. The government plans to improve the fairness of the system by employing and training admissions officers and strengthening their expertise.

3. Provision of university admissions information through Educational Broadcasting System (EBS)

In an attempt to broaden the provision of university admissions information MEST will enhance the quality of EBS programs and relate information to the college entrance examination by utilizing renowned instructors and effective education materials.

4. Fostering of nuclear energy as export industry

As Jordan chose a Korean consortium over those from other countries as its primary partner in building its first- atomic research reactor, a nuclear plant construction deal will be concluded between the two nations sometime in the first half of 2010. Korean and Arab countries are expected to discuss ways to cooperate in constructing future atomic plants.

5. Promotion of international science-business belt

The government plans to build the country's leading business-science hub to accommodate corporations, universities, and research institutions. It proceeds to give incentives regarding taxes and educational and medical services to attract universities, organizations, and businesses.

6. Development of GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) Program

While the Korean government scholarship program is expanded to the GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) Program, the government will provide financial support for foreign students and increase the number of the students.
