The South Korean government has pledged 1.5 billion KRW to support the development and stimulation of the internet-based distance learning industry. The Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) included the pledge in an execution plan agreed to in its Working Committee on Expanding the E-Learning Industry, a joint citizen-government committee.

The MKE, the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, and several other government offices plan to promote thirty-two specific areas in the industry, including standardization, skills development, and specialized training. Of particular note, they intend to form a Council on the Overseas Expansion of E-Learning to assist in the overseas expansion of the country’s best e-learning businesses and dispatch teams to break into the markets of Malaysia, Russia, China, and other critical countries during the latter half of the year.
